Shipping to Guyana

Recent innovations, particularly those in port facilities and freight handling, in the Caribbean has seen the region become increasingly more powerful on the world trade stage. And in a region which is the epitome of cultural cross-pollination and geographic variety, perhaps the most unique country of them all is Guyana. Culturally seen as part of The Caribbean, geographically part of South America, Guyana, by virtual of size, geology, environment and factors of access not only shares the same challenges when it comes to those of its island neighbours but also comes with its own personal pros and cons. On the topic of pros, we are glad to offer shipping services directly to Guyana.

A disturbing and beautifully told story about coolies and Guyana:

At the top level, Guyana is important for gold and mineral exports, as well as the more traditional sugar cane and brown rice. In turn, it imports fuel and drilling equipment, chemical products and all manner of machinery associated with the oil industry, which it undertakes both off-shore and inland. With energy being such an important industry, the country has strong connections across the globe, from North America, Europe and the far east.

But of course, Guyana’s freight operations are concerned with much more than just big business, though these have meant that shipping via the USA in particular, and the world in general, has become a slick and efficient process. On the back of such connections, everything from more the products of the more specialized or more modest business to car imports, house moves and individual parcel services are all well catered for. Throughout the region, there are also barrel shipping services which allow for non-standard or mixed items to be shipped locally, and this is also a regular feature of Guyana’s smaller freight operations.

Air Freight services are available, though more costly, and Guyana is unique of all the Caribbean countries that it can be accessed by land and so overland services, particularly from the rest of South America are also an option. But much of the long haul freight comes via Florida (where we are located), as it does for the rest of the region. That said, other southern US ports such as Houston and Savannah are also becoming a bigger part of the equation. It is worth noting the many of the companies operating between the USA and the main port, container terminal and capital of Georgetown, are run by Guyanese ex-patriots and their descendants. This is particularly true of Savannah, Georgia. And a little local knowledge always makes the difference.

Guyana is a country on the rise when it comes to its prowess in maritime trade, particularly direct trade with the USA and such operations between the two countries rose by over 43% in the last year alone. It’s also one of the fastest developing country’s in the western hemisphere, and with ongoing foreign investment and industrial development, plus a program of debt reduction by successive governments, Guyana is a country which is going places, just like its freight operations.

Most of the workforce at Caribbean Ocean Freight is Guyanese, and so we are confident of claiming that we specialize in shipping to Guyana. Help us to help Guyana continue to grow with shipping into the land of many rivers.
